Will a Steel Roof Attract Lightning?
A steel roof does not attract lightning, but if your home is struck, a metal roof can actually be safer than other roofing materials.
Why wont the steel roof attract lightning?
- Lightning is drawn to the highest point, not necessarily metal. It seeks the easiest path to the ground, usually tall trees, poles, or buildings.
- Metal is non-combustible, reducing fire risk. Unlike wood or asphalt shingles, a steel roof won’t catch fire if struck.
- Proper grounding matters. If your house is properly grounded, the electricity will safely disperse into the ground.
Should You Worry?
If your home isn’t the tallest structure around, it’s unlikely to be hit. But if you’re in an area with frequent lightning, consider adding a lightning protection system for extra safety.
